Mountain Bike Fitting
Mountain Bike fitting is one of the most important things to remember when you decide that you want to get into the awesome sport of mountain biking. You cannot just go buy any bike and think it is ready for the trails that you will encounter. Mountain bike fitting is a process of selecting the proper bike, the proper upgrades for the bike, the proper attire and the proper protective equipment for yourself – and putting it all together, before you head out to the trails.
The bike is the first thing to fit. There are many to choose from, but they won’t all be right for you. As a beginner, you really just need a basic bike for the beginner trails – but your skills will advance quickly, and you need a bike that can grow with you. Make sure that the bike you choose is upgradeable – but don’t buy more bike than your skills will allow you to handle right away.
You want the bike that you choose to be able to handle all terrains. This means that the bike needs to be well constructed, sturdy, and durable. As a beginner, you really have no way of knowing for sure as to whether or not you will be interested in hard core trail riding, or even racing. Make sure that the frame of your bike can handle all situations – even if the other components are not up to snuff for hard core riding or racing – at the moment.
There is a great deal of personal protection that you need to buy. You definitely need a helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads, and a calf guard. You may also want safety glasses. A lumbar pack to carry extra water and a first aid kit is essential. Comfortable clothing and good mountain biking shoes are also necessary.
The mountain bike fitting process may also include some instructional material, such as books and videos. Make sure that you know basic mountain biking skills before you take off on a trail. That instructional material can mean the difference between being safe out on the trail, and becoming injured quickly!
